How to Make Any Location Cinematic
Unlocking the Secrets of Transforming Challenging Locations into Cinematic Marvels
In the world of filmmaking, the location often plays a pivotal role in shaping the narrative. Some locales effortlessly bestow their magic upon the camera, blessed with abundant natural light, captivating textures, and a vibrant palette of colors. However, there are times when we find ourselves facing less accommodating settings—those with stark, white walls and a notable absence of depth. Today, we embark on an exhilarating cinematic journey, orchestrated in collaboration with DP extraordinaire, Daniel Ruth.
Mr. Ruth, a virtuoso with an impressive portfolio spanning the realms of educational films, short features, and commercial masterpieces, faces a unique challenge—the location for this venture is my abode. While I cherish my dwelling, it's not the ideal canvas for cinematic artistry.
Our odyssey begins with the meticulous setup of our camera, a task requiring finesse and a discerning eye. We scour the house for a spot that offers the ideal blend of depth and the precious gift of natural light. Our camera of choice is the Canon C70, thoughtfully provided by Canon for this particular undertaking. The C70 boasts an RF Mount, a feature I hold in high regard. For our initial configuration, we opted for Canon Cinema lenses, skillfully adapting them to the RF Mount using the EF to EOS R adapter. This clever adaptation bestows an extra f-stop of luminosity upon our lenses, transforming a humble 24-105mm lens into a formidable 2.8 marvel, a feat even the lens itself acknowledges on its display, now boasting a radiant 0.9.
Notably, the RF Mount confers a full-frame field of view upon our visual canvas. The C70 houses a 35mm sensor, but with the adapter in play, it magically extends its reach, granting us a sweeping vista. We have a 24-70mm RF lens awaiting its turn, ready to take the reins for our next creative endeavor.
However, at this early stage, with our house lights blazing and no adjustments made, the imagery before us is nothing short of visually distressing—a cacophony of light and shadows that leaves much to be desired. The time has come to extinguish these artificial lumens and embrace the gentle caress of natural light filtering through our windows. The result is transformative; we are gifted with a scene illuminated solely by the sun's benevolent rays. This shift creates a delightful separation between our subject and the background, skillfully harnessed by manipulating the depth of field.
To achieve the desired f-stop, we turn to our internal NDS, an indispensable tool when working with a camera of this caliber. The NDS ushers in the perfect balance of luminosity and depth, setting the stage for our creative process.
The real artistry commences as Daniel situates a solitary light outside a window, casting a soft glow that elegantly dances upon our subject, Justin. We initiate with the key light, a pivotal element shaping the visual narrative. Our 1200D source bathes itself in elegance, filtering through a bleached muslin and a delicate veil of diffusion, creating a luminous tapestry. This technique, known as "double braking," grants us control over the ambiance, orchestrating a dance of light and shadow. Our objective? To tame the excessively radiant backdrop and ensure it harmonizes seamlessly with our key light.
To further sculpt the scene, we introduce a "stop sign" bounce, gracing Justin's profile with a subtle, yet essential, touch of highlight. However, our quest for visual perfection leaves us yearning for more, and so, a small light source emerges to further elevate the artistry. A practical light adds its magic, casting a soft glow behind Justin, and painting a picture of depth and intrigue.
Continuing our symphony of light manipulation, a six-by-solid screen enters the stage, bestowing a mesmerizing texture to Justin's visage. This simple addition increases the contrast on his shadowed side, creating a visual masterpiece. Yet, we're not done; another tube light emerges, kissing the back of Justin's head with a gentle touch, a touch that adds depth and character to the scene.
With our lighting orchestration reaching its crescendo, the results are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The walls are now drenched in a captivating tapestry of shadows, devoid of the errant sliver of light that once marred our canvas. The subtle intricacies come to life, and we savor the atmosphere of our environment, a symphony where each note contributes to the grand composition. Haze emerges as an essential element, filling the air with an intangible magic, and infusing the frame with depth and ambiance.
The sheer dynamic range of our camera, boasting a staggering 16-plus stops, elevates our craft to new heights. While this scene remains meticulously controlled, the brilliant window vistas pose unique challenges. Yet, with the power of this camera, we harness the luminosity of the outdoors, deftly adjusting our settings to craft a captivating nocturnal scene within the bounds of the sun's embrace. This illusion, a day-for-night transformation, is a testament to the camera's capabilities, allowing us to explore uncharted creative territories.
We navigate these challenges while taking advantage of the camera's robust features. Shooting in log format ensures we capture the full spectrum of visual possibilities, while the option to shoot in raw further empowers us to fine-tune our imagery. The C70's internal image stabilization proves invaluable, offering a degree of fluidity to our shots that was once a distant dream, particularly when working with non-stabilized lenses. Our artistry is not constrained by technology but propelled by it.
To embrace handheld cinematography, we seamlessly transition to RF lenses, complete with built-in image stabilization. This shift affords us the freedom to explore innovative angles while maintaining the integrity of our meticulously crafted lighting. Our journey unfolds with dynamic sequences, pushing the boundaries of our craft.
The magic doesn't end here; our journey takes a detour to explore the mysteries of an entirely different setting. Daniel, the mastermind behind our visual tapestry, leads us to a fresh canvas—a hallway descending towards a staircase. This locale promises depth and room for creative exploration, but as before, the initial canvas is less than inspiring.
We extinguish the artificial lights once more, plunging the scene into a dramatic chiaroscuro. This transformation takes shape through the strategic placement of lights—a masterful dance of shadows and highlights. The top of the staircase witnesses the introduction of a source, casting its glow upon a strategically positioned bounce, adding dimension to the steps and delicately silhouetting Justin. The side panels come alive, their panels revealing a cascade of warm hues, giving life to the foreground.
A few carefully positioned MC Lights set to warmer tones contribute to the visual tapestry, bestowing depth and intrigue upon the setting. These small but pivotal lights play their part, delicately illuminating surfaces with a gentle touch. A flashlight in Justin's hand adds an element of realism, allowing the scene to take on a mesmerizing quality. A beam of light dances upon the haze, creating a dynamic interplay of illumination as Justin moves through the space.
However, the pièce de résistance is the utilization of haze. This ethereal element elevates our visuals to a higher plane, adding depth and character. The transformation is remarkable; the interplay of light and haze creates a spellbinding cinematic experience. We journey from heavy haze to subtle veils, each iteration offering a unique ambiance. The haze is an alchemical element, transforming our canvas into a realm of storytelling.
The camera, a trusty companion on this creative odyssey, offers us a staggering 16-plus stops of dynamic range. This robust range empowers us to capture the nuances of our setting, ensuring a seamless visual narrative. The camera's versatility is our ally, allowing us to shoot in log format, preserving the full spectrum of our artistic vision. Additionally, the camera's ability to record in raw format to the SD card provides post-production flexibility, a welcome boon to the modern filmmaker.
In the realm of filmmaking, the magic often lies in the details, and the Canon C70 offers us the tools to control and finesse our vision. One standout feature is the autofocus, a dependable companion when capturing intricate shots. The camera's face detection feature ensures that even if our subject turns away or ventures outside the frame, our focus remains unwavering. The camera's autonomy in focus adjustment is a welcome addition, offering a customizable experience that aligns with our creative vision.
The journey concludes with a handheld exploration, facilitated by the camera's internal image stabilization. With this technology in play, even manual EF lenses become a viable choice for handheld shots. This newfound fluidity allows us to tap into the creative potential of our anamorphic lenses, adding a cinematic touch to our visual narrative.
In conclusion, our foray into the realm of location transformation underscores the creative potential of the Canon C70, a camera that effortlessly combines cutting-edge technology with practical utility. While this episode is brought to you in partnership with Canon, my enthusiasm for this remarkable piece of technology is entirely genuine. The Canon C70 offers a comprehensive toolkit for modern filmmakers, boasting outstanding audio capabilities, exquisite color rendition, slow-motion prowess, and invaluable internal image stabilization.
